A Message From J+R Enterprises, Inc.
Thank you for your interest in J+R's SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE. We would like to welcome newcomers as well as long time cabinetmakers to the advantage of System 32® hardware and our SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE. I have been a cabinetmaker since 1975 and in our shop we use a hybrid system of standard American size panels, but use all European style hardware. This is actually the best of two worlds since it crosses between face frame and frameless cabinet construction. Once you have had the chance to work with the system concept, I am confident that you will see the value in using standardized hardware, shelf pins and drawer guides.
Let's approach hardware first. In our shop, there used to be confusion when we had to change sizes of screws between different brands and types of hardware as well as having to change the sizes of pilot holes for the screws. When utilizing the SYSTEM 3200, you only have to use one size screw called a system screw. These screws all fit into a 5mm pilot hole. System screws do come in different lengths, however, so that they can be used where some hardware thicknesses demand a longer fastener for positive holding.
Many of you are using shelf standards and clips for your adjustable shelf needs. Here again, you can save time and money. The 5mm hole is the correct size for the System Adjustable Shelf Pins. These pins come in a variety of shapes and colors and all have metal 5mm studs that fit securely into our 5mm system holes. Where shearing has occasionally presented a problem with plastic pins of the 1/4" variety, I have never had this occur with 5mm metal/plastic combination pins.
Moving ahead to drawer guides, once again the 5mm system screw can be used in the European style drawer guides as well as some others. You can eliminate the frustration of mismatched screw and hardware combinations by simply using all European style hardware. By the way, this hardware is not only made in Europe - it is also manufactured by some large American hardware companies.
We hope the simple artwork on the other side of this sheet shows you how our SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE can ease you into the "System" method of hardware and construction. Where metric size panels are shown next to their American counterparts, you'll notice very little difference from American size panels. The most important rule in system panels is to use even multiples of 32mm to size all panels so that there is no right hand or left hand design attributable to stock panels. This approach can also be used on custom units.
Many production shops set up their line boring equipment and drill a complete series of holes, only using the ones they need (see illustrations). With the SYSTEM 3200 you can be selective by planning ahead and drilling only the system holes you need in the components you are manufacturing. This results in a much cleaner finished product, especially in custom case work. The SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE BARS are pictured positioned on two parallel adjustment arms which are calibrated in American and Metric standard. The template bars themselves have a center index point to allow easy alignment on component parts. The SYSTEM 3200 can be used for pre-drilling all hardware holes including drawer guide holes. The positive 90° perpendicular alignment of bars allows perfect positioning of drawer guides and ease of installation of hardware before or after cabinet boxes are assembled.
J+R's original concept behind the SYSTEM 3200 was just for drilling holes for shelf pins. As the idea developed I enhanced the design to incorporate the 32mm System to make the tool a multiple use item. Once you have started using European style hardware you will find the SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE an invaluable tool for learning as well as producing. Work a cabinet maker does to panels and components prior to assembly saves time and eliminates costly rework of assembled units. We hope you agree and find the J+R SYSTEM 3200 ADJUSTABLE DRILLING TEMPLATE a welcome addition to your cabinet and woodworking tools and accessories.
If you should have any comments or questions, I would welcome hearing from you.
Sincerely,
JEFF MANLEY
